Our Story
Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. is a 501c7 nonprofit, Asian-interest sorority that was founded on March 9, 1995 at the State University of New York (SUNY) Binghamton in Binghamton, New York.
Several years ago, seven beautiful women lit the fire that is Kappa Phi Lambda and watched it grow. That fire now burns brightly within each of its present sisters, carrying with it all of our individual aspects, and it will continue to burn within the sisters to come.
Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority (ΚΦΛ) was founded by seven extraordinary women – Elizabeth Choi, Karen Eng, Rei Hirasawa, Hee Cho Moon, Chae Yoo, Samantha Somchanhmavong, and Connie Yang. These strong and brave women were united by a single vision of providing women with the chance to use their pride in their heritage to become leaders of society. They started a sisterhood that would encompass the very foundational values 4,000+ sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda today continue to embrace and promote. At the core of its mission, Kappa Phi Lambda strives to promote academic excellence, cultivate strength and unity in sisterhood, provide service to communities in need and raise cultural awareness.
Held together by the bond of sisterhood and striving to educate each other and the rest of the community, our founding mothers not only channeled Asian American awareness through voice, but also by action. They taught each other about strength and ambition while discovering their own true unparalleled identities in the process. These first sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda also extended their hands to the community through charitable works of both service oriented and philanthropic natures. By doing so, they were able to make a real and impacting difference in the world around them.
We, the sisters of the Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, strive to strengthen Sisterhood amongst women by providing Service and promoting Cultural Diversity to our members and our community, thus securing the bond of kinship for posterity. Kappa Phi Lambda exists to further educate individuals about Pan-Asian culture, while keeping our own identities. We aim for academic excellence, keeping in mind the importance of education and learning as the key to strength, awareness, and fulfillment.

Our Pillars
Sisterhood Service Cultural Diversity
Kappa Phi Lambda promotes the following values across its Chapters and Associate Chapters – Sisterhood, Service, Cultural Diversity. Although each chapter of Kappa Phi Lambda is unique in its approach to promoting these pillars, they are the foundation of our sorority and the virtues that bring us together in sisterhood. These values do not make us better than anyone; rather, they allow our sisters to become stronger women, provide service, and help advocate for cultural diversity within the greater community.
