Statement to Address the Rescinding of DACA
September 12th, 2017 – – We, the Sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., are deeply disheartened by the White House Administration’s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Established in June 2012, DACA serves to protect eligible immigrant youth who were brought to the United States as children from deportation and provide work permits.
Over 800,000 individuals from different backgrounds and stories will be affected by this action. These individuals may be close friends, colleagues, mentors, family, and perhaps even some of our very own Sisters. As an organization dedicated to promoting and educating members and communities not only on Pan-Asian culture but Cultural Diversity, we are committed to supporting our Sisters who may be affected.
The decision to end DACA comes with a six-month wind down and leaves an open door for Congress to act and pass legislation by March 5th, 2018. We encourage our Sisters and the community to reach out to their respective Senators and Congressional Representative(s).
